Dog Pumpkin Costume

According to the National Retail Federation the Hottest Dog Halloween Costume trending is the Pet Pumpkin Costume! Which is great news for Canine & Co who specialise in these fancy dress costumes for pets. “We are the only UK company to have produced Dog Pumpkin Costumes for larger dog breeds. Typically fancy dress for dogs tends to reach a small/medium sized dog and it didn’t seem fair to leave out our larger four legged friends. So after feedback last year we are proud to offer customers big dog sized Pumpkin costumes fitting a chest size up to a whopping 40″ said a spokesperson from Canine & Co.

The good news is that the Dog Pumpkin Outfits are easy to fit. Simply open the costume flat, lay it over your dog’s back and then fasten the velcro (as comfortable) around their front and under their belly! Easy. There are no restrictions to movement as the costume does not have leg holes. The oufits are fully lined in a nice warm fleecy material and you can alter the velcro to fit.

Research has found that some owners like to dress their family pet up in a similar theme of costumes such as Pumpkins which are widely available for all the family including our furry friends with Canine & Co’s range of Dog Pumpkin Outfits for tiny to really big dogs!

It’s Howl-o-Ween – ensure your pet is the best dressed

It’s Halloween, a time when children are excited, looking cute in their scary Halloween costumes ready to go door to door trick or treating.  This year why not take your furry friend with you, dressed in a Pumpkin dog outfit, it will certainly help ensure you come back with a bag full of treats.  Halloween costumes for your pets have become a hit with dog owners over recent years.  And as long as its safe why shouldn’t they join in the fun.  Fancy dress for pets is big business especially Dog Halloween Costumes.

Throughout the world the annual Halloween Dog Costume Parades set tongues and tails wagging with their creative ideas.  The demand has certainly grown in the past number of years and it is fair to say a number of pups like getting dressed up for the extra attention and treats they receive.  However, it is important that some do not like this and may become stressed in such situations.  Therefore in this situation it is best to keep your pet at home – you know your dog better than anyone and should make the most appropriate decision for them.

New for 2014 are our exclusive Halloween Costumes for Larger Dog Breeds.  They are an important member of the family and trying to find a fancy dress costume for bigger dogs is hard to come by.  That is why we are the first to introduce them, they are designed so that they are quick and easy to fit and take off, can be adjusted to suit your dog’s size and do not restrict any movement ensuring the comfort of your pet.  Treat your larger furry friend to their own outfit today with our glorious Pumpkin outfit – the pawfect solution for any party or celebration – Halloween Dog Costumes for Large Dogs!

Dog in Halloween Costume

For those of our furry friends who have not worn a costume before, here are a few tips-

  • Don’t leave it until the last minute – order an Halloween costume for your dog a couple of weeks before;
  •  Choose one that looks like it will be safe, comfortable and not restrict movement;
  • Make sure you choose the correct size.  Here at Canine & Co we offer a free service to check and measure all dog clothing for you.  If in doubt over the size – you are best going for slightly larger to ensure there is no restriction of movement.  Also clothing should not be skin tight – there must always be room to allow your pooch’s body to breathe and avoid overheating;
  • Check there is nothing on the costume that can harm your pet;
  • When the costume arrives, let your dog or cat sniff it, then lay it over him for a minute, praise him and then give him a treat.  Do this everyday, leaving the costume on for longer each time.  Eventually put the costume on your pet, but loosely and repeat as above by leaving it on him for a minute and then praise him and give him a treat, extending the time each day.

You will be able to tell from your cat or dog’s response if he is happy with the costume.  If you try the above and your pet gets nervous or anxious – then he is one of those that do not like dressing up and it would be unfair to continue.  Maybe try different materials or styles, however if he continues to look anxious, then it is best to leave dressing your dog or cat up.

When wearing a cat or dog costume it is important to ensure that you do not leave your pet unattended at any time.

Dogs and Weddings

Including your pet on your Wedding day

The whole family wouldn’t be complete without your favourite furry friend. Who can resist giving an ooh or aww when they see an adorable pooch trotting down the aisle looking their very best with a wagging tail? Here are some top tips to help and a selection of dog clothes and accessories to make sure your pooch looks the part on your Big Day.

Including pets in your wedding festivities takes some careful thinking and planning to make sure you get it right. So here are Canine & Co’s 10 top tips to make sure planning your pooch’s part in your wedding goes smoothly.

10 TOP TIPS

  1. Has your dog got what it takes – As everyone knows weddings can be stressful and overwhelming at times, this can cause a dog who does not adapt easily to new environments to become uncomfortable and stressed around strangers. However a more sociable, out-going dog can often cope better with the attention they’re likely to receive. If your dog can be uncomfortable around strangers and is shy it is probably best to leave them at home where its safe.
  2. Which part of the ceremony – it is best to involve your dog or puppy in the ceremony rather than the reception as these can be very overwhelming – especially for those who have a large guest list and repetitive loud music.
  3. Dogs allowed? – First be sure to check that your chosen wedding venue allows dogs – as some have a strict no dog’s policy.
  4. Tell your bridesmaids/groomsmen of you intentions – Some people are allergic to dogs giving them a heads-up/notice will help them prepare if they suffer from allergies.
  5. What role will your dog/puppy play? – Whether they will be a ring-bearer, flower girl or the hound of honor besure to start preparing early for the task they will be carrying out at the ceremony.
  6. Assign a handler – This person will be with your dog at all times throughout the ceremony – this will relieve any pressure that you might feel if your dog isn’t behaving properly.
  7. Rehearsal and repetition – rehearse as much as you can with your pet and leave plenty of time to practice during the actual rehearsal so that your dog (and its handler) know exactly what to do.
  8. Pretty and Perfect – take a trip to the groomers or wash your dog at home before the big day to makes sure your pet is in tip top shape and is smelling good. Plan their wedding dog outfit, buy it early to ensure it is the right fit and is comfortable without any restriction of movement.  If it is the first time your pour legged friend has worn clothes, you may wat to introduce them to it slowly and build up before the big day.  Their clothing can be anything from formal dog attire such as a Tuxedo or a dog dress to an accessory like a dog collar Bow Tie or diamante collar.
  9. Control – ensure that your dog is well-controlled around your guests, if your dog has a tendency to jump up,  make sure to take time before the big day to teach him alternate behaviour such as greeting a person by sitting down and giving them a paw rather than jumping up. If your dogs’ excitement level is too high they may find it hard to control their impulses -in which case, keep your dog leashed and controlled at all times.
  10. Memories – DO NOT forget to include your dog in wedding pictures!

Why should our pets wear Dog Jumpers?

We all tend to layer up with extra clothing in the colder months – but what about our canine companions?  Many people think dog clothes are just a gimmick or a fashion statement, but the truth is, for some breeds it makes sense to put a sweater on a dog or a puppy.

Puppies wearing jumpers

Small dogs, puppies, short-haired breeds such as Pugs, Greyhounds or Whippets, hairless breeds such as the Chinese Crested, older dogs and those with medical conditions such as Alpecia or Arthritis can feel the cold easily and dog jumpers can help keep them warm.  What these dogs have in common is that they have a more difficult time generating and retaining enough body heat on their own. For these pooches, a little help keeping dry and warm is always a good thing.  Although protection from the elements  is the biggest reason to put clothes on pets who are headed outside, it doesn’t hurt to leave a sweater on these pups inside if you’re keeping the heat down to save energy and money.  Jumpers help make life more comfortable for those four legged friends with arthritis.

Puppy wearing umper

If you see your pet shiver violently after exposure to winter temperatures, then do invest in a coat or jumper to provide that extra protection to extreme temperatures.  Ignore those that scoff at the idea of dog clothes because they clearly do not understand the rationale behind clothing for pets and it is better to put the health of your four legged friend first.

It is true that some dogs are equipped with their own external layering system, but some have lighter layers of fur than others and some are not genetically suited to the environments in which they are placed.  So man’s best friend may be uncomfortable with winter temperatures as would we if we went outside without clothing.  A Jumper or warm coat can be helpful during the cold seasons, especially if your pup is reluctant to go outside in the rain or snow to relieve themselves. Even if your pet doesn’t need a coat, it certainly won’t hurt him.  I know many people who put coats on before a walk in the rain beause their dog hates the rain and to save them the trouble of cleaning a wet pooch at the door before coming inside.  A well fitted dog coat will not restrict any movement or cause discomfort to your pet if acclimatised correctly to the clothing.

Chihuahua in Jumper

How warm your dog is able to physically keep himself depends on his breed, size and even his age, but if he doesn’t have a heavy coat – there is only so much curling up he can do to keep warm.   Hairless breeds such as the Chinese Crested and small dogs such as Chihuahua’s, Maltese, toy breeds and many more in particular are not equipped to deal with outdoor colder temperatures it is wise for owners to invest in a jumper to help keep them warm during daily walks or for just hanging around the house.  A Sweater can make a significant difference in your dog’s feeling of well-being.

It isn’t just short haired breeds that need outer clothing.  Dogs tend to have short-cropped hair for easier maintenance and to avoid matting – should also be given a sweater to protect them from low temperatures.  We mentioned older dogs earlier, they are not as active and tend to have a weaker immune system and those with diseases such as Alpecia or Cushings disease, hypothyriodism that can impair hair growth need an extra souce of clothing for warmth and a sweater or jumper can do this for them – even indoors.

Choosing a Dog Jumper

Once you have decided to get a jumper or sweater or indeed, hoodie for your pup, you will need to begin by considering material.  While wool is very warm, you will need to take into account how often it will need to be washed and whether it will make your dog more uncomfortable due to itching.  Cotton or acrylic may be better for your pet.  Our range of knitted jumpers are made from acrylic.

Second is making sure you choose the correct size.  Just because a size say Large – it necessarily doesn’t mean it will fit large breeds.  There are 100’s of different breeds and you need to check the dog clothing size guide to double check the measurements.  You want the jumper to be snug (but not tight to allow it’s body to breathe), you don’t want your pooch to be able to pull it off easily or be too long that it drags on the floor causing your pet potential injury through tripping.  Typically you need to measure your pet around the deepest part of their chest and their length from neck to base of tail.  If you need any help – just email us at woof@canineandco.co.uk and we will guide you through the process.  Ensure your pet is not restricted anywhere when wearing the clothing particularly around the neck or around the armpits.

Our knitted dog jumpers are super soft and easy to pull on and off.  This is important as you don’t want to put off your puppy by causing them to struggle.  Another important factor is to allow your pet to acclimatise to their new clothing to avoid any unecessary stress.  See our article on introducing your pet to dog clothing for the first time.

Dogs in Jumpers

Our jealously gorgeous range of jumpers and sweaters are perfect for keeping your pooch warm and snug and new for winter 2013 we have “Large Dog Jumpers” for all larger breeds who need that bit of extra warmth due to their hair, age, medical condition or other reason.  We also have a great selection of large dog clothes such as waterproof coats.  All our dog jumpers are fit for purpose whilst being stylish and bark on trend.  So go ahead and keep your pet warm and he’ll enjoy the attention he will receive for looking so smart.

How to Fit a Dog Harness

Puppia Harness

Puppia Soft Dog Harness

Our pets don’t ask much from us but ‘Walkies’ is one of their highlights! Using a harness is much kinder, especially if your dog is prone to pulling on a lead, as it spreads the weight across their chest instead of pulling at their delicate neck areas. However, finding the right fit of harness for your pup is an area that can be confusing. We hope to demystify this with our easy to use guide on how to find the right fit. It’s important to find the right sized dog harness for your individual pet to ensure they are comfortable and to ensure your pet is happy to wear it and also to ensure they feel secure. Here we look at the important measurements you will need and once known how to fit a soft dog harness such as Puppia Harnesses easily on your pet.

Puppia Harness

Blue Puppia Harness

How do you find the right fit for your pet?

There are two main measurements you need to focus on and that is – the chest and also the neck.

Neck Size – an important point to note:-

If you are choosing a soft dog harness or a Puppia harness then you need to consider your dog’s head girth.  It is not enough to just check the neck size, because you still have to slip the harness over your dogs head and some breeds have a larger head than their neck size.  Therefore as a guide, you should ensure that you choose a harness that is at least 1 inch bigger than their neck size or better still measure your dog’s head girth (or get a tape measure and make a circle the same size as the harness and see if it will fit over your pets head easily).  The chest size is adjustable whereas the neck size is not on the majority of these styles.

Chest Size

This is the deepest part of your dog’s body behind their front legs.  As the chest size is adjustable, choose a size that will fit comfortably.  Consider, also if you are intending on putting your pet’s harness over dog clothes – make sure you have chosen a size with enough adjustment to amend accordingly.  You do tend to find that there is quite a bit of adjustment with harnesses which allow for this and also allow room to alter if your pup grows.

  Puppia Harness

How to fit a Puppia or Soft Dog harness

It is important to understand how these are fitted to avoid any undue stress on your pooch.

1) Measure your dog’s girth as mentioned above and then adjust the chest belt to the correct size.  Please note this should not be too tight, it should be a comfortable fit with a small amount of space;

2) Open the clasp;

3) Slip the Puppia harness over your dog’s head (please note the Puppia Logo should be facing outward on your dog’s chest and NOT on your dog’s back, see pictures below);

4) Place your dog’s leg through one side;

5) Fasten the harness clasp by taking the strap behind your dog’s other front leg and fastening around the ches;

6) Attach the lead to the ‘D’ ring which should be situated on your dog’s back.
